The passion for the sea and the wind is something you want to share with your whole family. More and more parents who kitesurf themselves wonder: when can my child start? Kitesurfing is a fantastic sport for all ages, but of course, there are special considerations for children. From what age is it safe? What does a lesson for kids look like? And is it suitable for my son or daughter?
In this article, we answer all your questions about kitesurfing with children. We discuss the ideal starting age, the importance of weight and motivation, and how we at Kitesurfspot ensure a safe, playful, and unforgettable first introduction to the sport.
A frequently asked question! Although there is no official, legal minimum age, most kitesurfing schools, including Kitesurfspot, use a guideline.
The magic number: 10 years and 35 kg
In general, we maintain a minimum age of 10 years. However, the most important factor is not age, but the child's weight. A child must weigh at least 35 kilograms to safely handle a small kite. This is crucial to prevent them from being dragged by the kite, even in light wind.
1. Safety: A child must literally and figuratively stand firm. Sufficient weight is needed to resist the pulling force of the kite.
2. Equipment: The smallest adult kites are often still too powerful for light children. We use special small equipment, but even then, a minimum weight is required.
3. Physical Strength & Endurance: Although technique is more important than pure strength, kitesurfing does demand something from your body. Children need the energy to last a lesson of a few hours.

A kitesurfing lesson for a child is different from one for an adult. The focus is even more on safety, but especially on fun and playful learning.
We structure the lesson around games and short, clear instructions. The goal is not to get on the board as quickly as possible, but to become familiar with the kite and the wind in a fun way. Fun comes first!
For children, we always recommend a private lesson. This guarantees 100% attention from the instructor. The instructor can perfectly adjust the pace to the child and intervene immediately if necessary. This is the safest and most effective way for a child to learn.
We use the smallest and safest kites in our range. Children also get a suitable small board, a well-fitting wetsuit, and a helmet. Safety above all.
We choose days with the perfect wind for beginners: a stable, not too strong wind (between 12-20 knots). The lessons take place at the Zandmotor, where the water is shallow and flat. This is the ideal and safest learning environment.

Do you doubt whether your child is ready for a kitesurfing lesson? Go through this checklist:
Swimming Certificate: Is your child a good swimmer and not afraid in the water? A swimming certificate is a must.
Motivation: Does the child want to learn to kitesurf, or is it mainly a wish of the parents? Self-motivation is the key to success and fun.
Concentration: Can your child concentrate on instructions for a longer period? Safety depends on following the directions correctly.
Weight: Does your child weigh at least 35 kg?
Can you answer 'yes' to all of these? Then there is a good chance that your child will have a fantastic time on the water!
The cost of a kitesurfing lesson for children is comparable to that for adults. A 3-day beginner's course starts from €269. Since we recommend a private lesson for children, the price may be slightly higher. Contact us for exact prices and options.
All materials are included: wetsuit, harness, helmet, kite, and board. As a parent, you don't need to purchase anything extra. Check our packing list to know what your child should bring.
With the right guidance and under the right conditions, kitesurfing is no more dangerous than other outdoor sports. At Kitesurfspot, safety comes first. We use modern equipment with the best safety systems, and our IKO-certified instructors are specially trained to work with children. Read more about kitesurfing safety here.
This varies greatly per child. Some natural talents are riding independently after 3 lessons, while others need more time. We recommend starting with a 3-day beginner's course to build a solid foundation. The most important thing is that the child has fun; progress will then come naturally.
Yes, of course! From the beach or our terrace at the kitesurfing school, you can perfectly follow your child's progress. It's great to see that first smile when they get the kite under control!
Kitesurfing can be a fantastic sport for children, provided it is taught correctly. With a minimum weight of 35 kg, an age of around 10 years, and a good dose of self-motivation, your child can take the first steps in this great water sport. Choose a specialized school that has experience with children and invest in a private lesson for the best and safest start.
