So, you're thinking about learning to kitesurf? That's awesome! You've probably seen kitesurfers gliding across the water and thought, "I want to do that!" But maybe you also felt a little intimidated. Is it hard? Is it safe? What actually happens during a first lesson? It's completely normal to have these questions. Many of our students at Kitesurfspot.nl start with the same mix of excitement and uncertainty. This guide is here to walk you through exactly what to expect from your first kitesurfing lesson, taking away the fear and replacing it with pure excitement for the adventure ahead.
Before we dive into the details, let's talk about safety. You might be tempted to learn from YouTube videos or a friend who kitesurfs. While these can be useful resources later on, they are no substitute for a professional lesson. Kitesurfing involves powerful forces of nature, and understanding how to manage them safely is crucial. A certified instructor will teach you the fundamental safety systems and techniques that are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. At Kitesurfspot.nl, all our instructors are IKO-certified and will guide you every step of the way. Your first lesson is not just about learning to kitesurf — it's about learning to do it safely and with confidence. That's why we offer a 1-day kitesurfing course designed to give you the best possible start.

Your first lesson will be a mix of theory and hands-on practice, all on the beautiful beaches near Scheveningen. Here's what a typical first day looks like:
The day kicks off with a short but essential theory session. Your instructor will explain how wind works, what the "wind window" is, and how to use the safety systems on your equipment. Don't worry — it's not a boring classroom lecture. It's practical, visual, and directly applicable. After the theory, you'll get your hands on a small trainer kite. This is a two-line kite that's easy to control and gives you a great feel for how a kite responds to your movements. You'll practice steering, powering up, and depowering the kite. Most students find this surprisingly intuitive and a lot of fun!
Once you've mastered the trainer kite, it's time to step up to the real thing: a full-size four-line kite. This is where it gets exciting! You'll learn how to launch and land the kite safely, how to use the bar to control its power, and how to activate the safety systems if needed. Your instructor stays close by at all times, making sure you feel comfortable and in control. The beach is the perfect environment for this — plenty of space, soft sand to land on, and no obstacles.
This is the highlight for most beginners. With the big kite, you'll head into the water (still without a board). Your instructor stays nearby as you let the kite dive through the wind window, building power and pulling you smoothly through the water. This is called "body dragging," and the feeling is incredible! You feel the power of the wind, the water rushing past you, and you're still in full control. We also practice "upwind" body dragging — a technique you'll need later to retrieve your board. This is the moment most students realize: "I can actually do this!" If you want to experience this first kitesurfing experience for yourself, our beginner courses are the perfect way to get started.

Depending on how quickly you pick things up and the conditions on the day, there may be time at the end of the lesson to try the water start. This is where you get a board on your feet and use the kite to pull yourself out of the water for your first ride. But don't be disappointed if this doesn't happen on day one. The focus of the first lesson is kite control and safety. The riding will come naturally, and many beginners choose a multi-day course to master this step, like our popular Beginner Deal.
Still have questions about your first kitesurfing lesson? See if your question is listed here.
Most people master the basics (kite control and body dragging) within one lesson. To ride independently and safely, most beginners need 3 to 5 lessons. It's easier than it looks!
A first lesson is the most affordable way to get into the sport. The cost of a kitesurfing lesson for beginners is a fraction of what full equipment costs. Check our rates for an idea of the investment in learning to kitesurf in Scheveningen.
We teach everyone from about 12 years old and a body weight of 40 kg. There is no maximum age. As long as you feel fit, you can get on the water!
Your first kitesurfing lesson is an unforgettable experience. It's a day full of new impressions, challenges, and above all, a lot of fun. You'll be amazed at how quickly you learn and how comfortable you feel with the kite. The focus is on a safe, step-by-step progression, so that at the end of the day you walk off the beach with a huge smile and a solid dose of confidence. You've laid the foundation for a new passion that will bring you joy for years to come.

The fastest and safest way to find out if kitesurfing is for you is to simply try it. A 1-day kitesurfing course is the perfect, low-barrier introduction. You'll immediately feel whether you have the "click" with the sport, without any commitment. Book your lesson and who knows — you might be riding the waves in Scheveningen before you know it!
