You've found the perfect kitesurfing spot, the sun is shining, and there's a nice breeze. But then you hear an experienced kiter say, "Watch out, the wind is offshore." What does that mean exactly, and why is it such a major warning in the kitesurfing world? Especially for beginners, it's crucial to understand the dangers of offshore wind.
In this article, we'll explain what offshore wind is, why it's the most treacherous condition to kitesurf in, and how you, as a beginner (and advanced rider), can stay safe. At Kitesurfspot, safety comes first, and knowledge about the wind is the most important step.
The name says it all: offshore wind is wind that blows directly from the land out to sea. If you're standing on the beach with the wind at your back while looking at the sea, you're dealing with offshore wind. This is in contrast to onshore wind, which blows from the sea onto the land, and side-onshore wind, which blows diagonally from the sea towards the land.
For most beachgoers, offshore wind is actually pleasant. The water is often flatter, and the wind feels less cold. For kitesurfers, however, this is a recipe for trouble.

So why is this wind direction so dangerous? It comes down to one simple fact: if something goes wrong, your only way out is towards the open sea.
This is the single biggest danger. If you have an equipment failure (e.g., a snapped line), your kite gets tangled, or you simply lose your board, with an offshore wind, you will inevitably be pushed further and further out to sea. Swimming back against the wind and waves is often impossible, even for the strongest swimmer. This can lead to life-threatening situations where you are helplessly adrift at sea.
Wind coming over land is disturbed by obstacles such as buildings, dunes, and trees. This creates turbulent, gusty wind at the coastline. One moment you have hardly any power in your kite, the next you are launched by a sudden, strong gust. This makes controlling your kite extremely difficult and unpredictable, especially during launching and landing.
Offshore wind smooths the water along the coast, which looks attractive to beginner kitesurfers. This "butter-flat" water is tempting, but looks can be deceiving. The dangers absolutely do not outweigh the advantage of the flat water. A safe spot like the Zandmotor also offers flat water, but with the safety of onshore or side-onshore wind.
As a beginner, you make mistakes. You will lose your board, struggle to ride upwind, or drop your kite in the water. With side-onshore wind, you slowly drift back to the coast. With offshore wind, every mistake pushes you further away from safety. There is simply no room to learn and practice.

Even for very experienced kitesurfers, it's a big risk. It is only done at specific locations with a rescue service, or on inland waters where you always end up on the other side. For the North Sea, the rule is: offshore is a no-go.
Activate your quick-release to completely depower the kite. Stay with your board and kite, as they provide buoyancy and visibility. Try to signal for help (phone in a waterproof case, whistle). Do not waste energy trying to swim against the wind.
Direct onshore wind is safer than offshore, but it can push you hard towards the beach and obstacles. That's why side-onshore wind is ideal: it gives you a safe buffer from the shore, while still ensuring you always drift back to the beach.
The rule is simple: as a beginner (and actually for 99% of all kitesurfers), you never ride in offshore wind on the open sea. The risk of being blown out to sea is too great. Kitesurfing is a fantastic sport, but only if you respect nature and know the safety rules. If you're in doubt about the conditions, ask for advice, skip a day, or book a lesson at a certified school. Your safety is the most important thing.
